Dejan Čurović (1968-2019)

'DJ Superstar', as his nickname was, played in Yugoslavia for FK Zemun and Partizan Belgrade. In 1994 he left for Vitesse. Where the ambitions were sky-high at that time. However, he fulfilled the high expectations in Arnhem without any problems. The Yugoslav formed with Nikos Machlas namely a feared duo in the PTT Telecompetition. And thanks to him, the Greek was able to become the European top scorer in 1998.

Čurović himself also provided a few nice milestones in the history of the Arnhemmers. For example, on March 25 he scored the first goal in the GelreDome stadium in the match against NAC, won 4-1. 'DJ' also scored the last goal in Stadion Nieuw Monnikenhuizen against FC Twente. What the former stadium of Vitesse is and was. This goal yielded a handsome 2-1 win. In total, Čurović scored 43 goals for Vitesse in 115 games.

In 2000, the lumpy striker was presented as the new 'superstar' at the recently promoted FC Groningen. But there the qualities of Čurović were less evident. This is because the Groningen players mainly played relegation football in the following seasons. But as a pinch hitter he was still regularly successful in the Oosterpark. Dejan scored a total of ten goals for the 'Pride of the North'.

In the 47 games that Dejan Curovic played in this squad, he scored 12 times. He received a total of 0 yellow, 0 yellow-red and 0 red cards. After his adventure in Groningen, 'DJ' ended his professional career. He played seven caps for Yugoslavia. After his career he became a businessman in his homeland, among other things. He was still regularly visible at Vitesse. For example, in 2017 he awarded the KNVB cup after the cup final won. He also unveiled the monument in front of the Nieuw-Monnikenhuize stadium.

Dejan Čurović died, bitterly enough, a day after his 51st birthday after a short illness. The football world was shocked at his death.
