Richard Knopper (1977)

Richard Knopper (29 August 1977) is a former midfielder of Ajax, Vitesse and ADO Den Haag, among others. The Hague-born Knopper was partly trained by Feyenoord (1988-1993) and partly by Ajax, where he made his debut in the main squad in 1997.

He made his debut in the game against Sparta, which was won 0-5. With Jari Litmanen and Frank de Boer as teammates, the attacking midfielder played one more game that season. The following season, Knopper played eleven games, after which his third year as an Ajax player marked his breakthrough.

Under trainer Jan Wouters he played 33 games and managed to score fifteen times, an excellent average for the then 23-year-old midfielder. In the following years he could not continue his high level. Partly because Co Adriaanse, successor of Wouters, did not see it that way in him. in the 2002/2003 season he was therefore loaned to the Greek Aris Thessaloniki and the following year to sc Heerenveen.

Ajax no longer had faith in its youth product and decided to say goodbye to Knopper in 2004, he would continue to play football at Vitesse. In Arnhem, Knopper played for two years and played together with Purrel Fränkel, Igor Gluscevic and Nicky Hofs, among others. This was followed by four seasons in his hometown, where he played football at ADO Den Haag.

After a very short period at the Indonesian PSM Makassar, Richard Knopper retired from professional football in 2011. Knopper has been active for some time as a youth trainer at ADO Den Haag (2013–2016). After that, Knopper started working at Ajax's youth academy. On May 13, he signed a two-year contract as an assistant coach with the first team of ADO Den Haag.
